The new BMW 1 M Coupe went for a short jaunt on the Nürburgring track, and the lap times released were 10 seconds faster than that of a BMW M3 E46 (from 2001 to 2006). Apparently all the attention lavished on this car was justified.
The 1 M clocked its fastest time at 8 minutes and 12 seconds, proving as quick as a Z4 M and quicker than a BMW M5 E60 (2004 to today), Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG and Porsche Cayman S.
A lot of people are expecting great things from the 1 M considering its featherweight, its proportions and its 3,0-litre, twin-Turbo inline-6 capable of producing 335 hp and 369 ft-lb of torque, but these results are truly impressive.

The BMW E36 is the third generation of the 3 Series compact executive cars produced by BMW. It was introduced in late 1990 (as a 1991 model) for Europe and in late 1991 (as a 1992 model) for US and Canada. It was the successor to the E30 3 Series and was eventually replaced by the E46 3 Series in 1998, though E36 coupes were still produced for the 1999 model year. The E36 experienced enormous success in the market. It laid strong foundations for the success that the BMW E46 experienced in subsequent years.
Also known as the "dolphin shape", the E36 was sold from 1991 through 1999. All E36 saloons, coupes, and station wagons employed the "Z-axle" multilink suspension in the rear which had been proven in the Z1. The hatchback body style, known as the E36/5 or BMW Compact, was identical to the regular E36 from front bumper to A-pillar. In order to save space due to its truncated rear end, the Compact used a rear semi-trailing arm suspension based on the old E30 (also found in the Z3 and M Coupe), instead of the Z-Axle Multilink employed in all other E36's.
In the United States, the four-door E36 were on sale by fall 1991, while the E30 coupes were retained until well into 1992 when they were replaced by E36 coupes. The E36 convertible was delayed until 1994.
The hatchback body style, known as the BMW Compact, was introduced in 1995 starting with the 318ti, being very popular in Europe but largely unsuccessful in North America. The "Touring" station wagon was sold in Europe from 1995, but was not available in the United States.
DOHC engines were used across the range (except in entry level models, see table below), with VANOS variable valve timing introduced in 1993. The 2.5 L M50B25 used in the 325i models was replaced in 1996 with the 2.8 L M52B28, creating the 328 line. Another 2.5 L I6 engine, the M52B25, was reintroduced for 1998 but badged as the 323i rather than 325i.

Green Tip Tuesday: How Green is your Car?
Can you believe it? Another Green Tip Tuesday? And just when you'd given up hope forever...
Today let's talk about cars. Over the summer we traded in my big ol' gas guzzling Saturn Outlook (16.9 mpg)
for an itty bitty Honda Insight Hybrid (45.6 mpg).
We made the trade because the lease on the Saturn was up anyway and we were looking to buy something less expensive, smaller, and great on gas mileage. Fortunately you don't have to trade in your old vehicle to "green up" your car. There are actually lots of little things we can all do that make a big impact. Most of them involve unlearning what we were taught about cars.
According to a post from Consumer's Report there were two mistakes I was making with my cars:
1. Oil should be changed about every 3000 miles? Nope. That was true for cars 15 years ago, but most cars now are designed to go about 7500 miles between oil changes. While changing the oil unnecessarily won't hurt the car, it certainly impacts the environment by adding a lot of hazardous waste (oil). Save yourself some money and change your oil less often.
2. You should let your engine warm up a few minutes before driving? Absolutely not. While my grandfather was right when he told me that, it's no longer true. Now you are just wasting gas and adding unnecessary carbon monoxide into the air.
I further researched and found an interesting article on a government webpage (so it must be true) about keeping tires properly inflated as a way to save on gas and ensure proper braking. Less gas = less dependance on petroleum = better for all of us.
Finally I have to mention washing your car. My husband is a tiny bit fanatical about keeping our cars clean and he usually wants to wash them himself, by hand, in the driveway, regardless of the temperature. Believe it or not, this is the least green way to go.
Many car washes now recycle their water but even for those who don't most states require a proper drainage system so the dirty, soapy water doesn't go directly into the groundwater supply. You can save a lot of water by going to a car wash instead of washing your car yourself.
Frequently I hear people say that they would love to be greener but it is so expensive. Not true, I say! You can use all the money you are saving on oil changes and extra gas from not idling your car to pay for your car wash and you'll still come out ahead.
My new car is silver, but it's a lot greener.
